Radio Amnion: Sounds for the Deep Sea

The Radio Amnion project emerged from an interdisciplinary collaboration between students of the CRC 1258 Neutrinos and Dark Matter in Astro- and Particle Physics and students of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. During the first funding period of the CRC, physicist Elisa Resconi initiated a competition inviting students to develop concepts for an underwater exhibition to accompany the STRAW (Strings for Absorption Length in Water) experiment in the Pacific Ocean.

Artist Jol Thoms' Radio Amnion was selected as one of the artworks to be encapsulated inside a STRAW glass sphere and deployed on the ocean floor as part of the broader UNDERCURRENTS art initiative. The installation was submerged in the Pacific Ocean in October 2020.

Constructed from glass, steel, rubber, and custom audio electronics, Radio Amnion functions as a symbolic deep-sea radio station. More than two kilometers beneath the ocean surface, it transmits sound works, voices, and musical compositions into what Thoms describes as the Earth's ‘amniotic waters’. The project invites contemporary artists, musicians, composers, and sound designers from around the world to contribute new works, creating an ongoing program of sonic transmissions of care in oceanic space.

These compositions are relayed through infrastructure associated with a deep-ocean neutrino detection experiment and can also be experienced online through the Radio Amnion platform. The project received support from the Canada Council for the Arts.

As the artwork remained on the seafloor, three full-scale replicas were constructed within the CRC 1258. These exhibition versions combine artistic audio contributions with information about the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE), a the next-generation neutrino telescope being developed in collaboration with the oceanographic observatory of Ocean Networks Canada. The installations have since travelled internationally, bringing together contemporary art, ocean ecology, and frontier astrophysics.
