Diogo da Cruz' "A shot in the dark" at the Serralves museum, Porto

Diogo da Cruz is currently presenting his performative installation "A shot in the dark" at Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal. With the installation, Diogo da Cruz proposes that the current research on dark matter, and in particular the CRESST experiment in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), might be creating a new photographic tool.

CRESST is an international collaboration including scientists from the SFB1258 building the most sensitive and accurate detector capable of recording of a substance that has never been detected, capable of provoking a paradigm shift in the physics community. By classifying this detector as a photographic camera, and introducing such scientific experience into the history of photography, Diogo da Cruz intends not only to show the literal universality of this subject to be discovered, but also to comment on the present difficulty of detecting absolute truths in the socio-cultural context.

Diogo da Cruz was one of the finalists of the prestigious Novo Banca Revelacao Award 2019 and received a production grant for the installation. The other finalists selected by an international jury were Luis Ramos and the winner Alice dos Reis. The collective exhibition at Serralves Museum is open until 15 March 2020 presenting the works of the three artists. The Novo Banco Revelacao Award is an intiative to support young artistic production in Portugal in the field of photography.

Diogo da Cruz is an Asstistant Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, and lives and works in Munich and Lisbon. He is one of the founders and coordinator of the independent project group SFB42, that brought together young artists from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and young physicists from the SFB1258 who are working together since then. To start their joint project, the group made a visit to the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in autumn 2018, where the experiments CRESST (indirect dark matter search), Gerda (search for the neutrinoless double beta decay) and Borexino (observation of solar neutrinos) are located, key experiments of the SFB1258.
