[aiskju:b] - Astroparticle Immersive Synthesizer, premiere, Berlin

From 28 August until 16 September 2018 the light-and-sound-installation [aiskkju:b] by the concept artist and composer Tim Otto Roth was on show in the empty hall of the St. Elisabeth church, Berlin, that was built by the German architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The installation was realized in collaboration with the IceCube Observatory and supported by the SFB258 at the Technical University of Munich.

AIS3 adopts the form and arrangement of the IceCube detector at the South Pole, consisting of 444 spherical loudspeakers hanging on thin wire ropes, creating a walk-in sound and light installation spanning over a volume of around 8 m x 8 m x 7 m. Recent data from the IceCube experiment is fed into the installation, whereupon the measured energies are translated into colored lights and sounds that fuse into different timbres, depending on one's position in the room. The goal is to provide both laypersons and scientists with a novel approach to physics research, but also to establish a new interdisciplinary art practice: AIS3 is an artwork and an experiment in psychoacoustics, turning the room itself into a sound generator in which the visitor becomes immersed.
